Ash Wednesday Craft for Kids and Lent Writing Reflection Activity for Faith-Based Learning
As a teacher, I’m always looking for meaningful ways to help children connect with their faith in a hands-on and engaging way. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a time for reflection, prayer, and spiritual growth. Teaching young students about this sacred season can be both rewarding and challenging, but incorporating crafts and writing activities makes the experience more tangible and impactful.
As a Catholic school teacher, I’ve come to see Ash Wednesday as the start of something deeply meaningful and powerful. This season is a reminder that from dust we came and to dust we shall return, but in Christ, we have the hope of new life.
Now, as I teach my students about this sacred season, I want them to truly understand the meaning behind Ash Wednesday in a way that is both engaging and age-appropriate. One of the best ways to do that in the classroom? A hands-on craft!
Why Teach Kids About Ash Wednesday?
Ash Wednesday marks the start of Lent, a 40-day journey leading up to Easter Sunday. It’s a time for believers to reflect on Jesus’ sacrifice, practice self-discipline, and grow in faith. For kids, this can feel abstract, but a simple craft can help them engage with the season in a tangible way.
A Simple Ash Wednesday Craft: "Lenten Promises Cross"
This easy craft encourages kids to think about what Lent means and how they can prepare their hearts for Easter.
Materials Needed:
✝️ White or colored cardstock paper
🖍️ Markers, crayons, or colored pencils
✂️ Scissors
📌 Glue or tape
📜 Printable “Lenten Promises” template (or blank paper for writing)
Instructions:
1️⃣ Cut Out a Cross – Start by drawing or printing a large cross shape on cardstock paper. Let kids cut it out (with supervision if needed).
2️⃣ Decorate the Cross – Have them color the cross and add symbols like a crown of thorns, a heart, or a sunrise to represent Easter’s hope.
3️⃣ Write Lenten Promises – On small paper strips or directly on the cross, kids can write or draw simple Lenten commitments, such as:
- “I will pray for someone every day.”
- “I will share with my friends.”
- “I will be kind to my family.”
5️⃣ Display It – Encourage them to hang their cross in their room or classroom to reflect on throughout Lent.
A Hands-On Way to Grow in Faith
This craft isn’t just about cutting and gluing—it’s about helping kids see Lent as a time of reflection, kindness, and preparation for Easter. When they look at their cross, they’ll remember that Jesus’ love and sacrifice lead to hope and new life.
So this Ash Wednesday, let’s invite children to engage with their faith in a hands-on way. Because at the heart of it all, Lent is a journey—a slow, steady walk toward the greatest joy of all: Resurrection Sunday.
